driveby christmas
and that was my last Christmas post from 2008. Next big thing to think about: what can one expect from 2009? Here's my list of wishes/expectations:
1. I will return to Norway
2. I will work
3. I will travel
4. I will study
5. My closet will be cleaned out and rationalized (as far as possible)
6. I will not cut my hair more than 5 cm (in total)
Hopefully, this is not completely unrealistic...

Presepio
I asked my students to name their favorite things about christmas, and first runner up was making these:
Every descent street corner in Dili has one. This one is from Bidau, not yet finished. The guys are keeping watch, in case someone from competing neighborhoods try to set it on fire.
(PS: the flag in the background is the flag of Fretilin, freedom fighters and governing party)

thoughts on a monday
So what I wonder is this:
What is the connection between society and moral standards? It seems to me that with the absence of family and close friends quite a lot of people loose their entire structure of do's and don'ts. It makes me wonder if maybe this philospher I read last year was right; if you commit a crime, and no one knows you did it, then morally you are innocent, because in your society's eyes you have done nothing wrong. So as long as no one from home, no one important, knows of ones misbehaviours, appearantly; it's alright!
